<p><b>American Sign Language 1</b></p> <p>Did you know that American Sign Language (ASL) is the third most commonly used language in North America? American Sign Language 1 introduces students to vocabulary and simple sentences, so they can start communicating right away. They also explore Deaf culture, education, and arts as they learn to view the Deaf community as a people group with unique social beliefs, traditions, history, and values. As they look at this unique language and community through a biblical lens, students discover the characteristics of spiritual community as well. Students also explore the principles of calling while learning about Thomas Gallaudet?s life and the characteristics of effective prayer. They examine what it means to be ?in the world but not of the world? and recognize Andrew Foster?s contributions to the Deaf community.</p> <p><i> Additional required equipment includes Audio/video recording device (video camera or webcam), and required software is screen-capture software or camera (to record conversation, simple audio/video recording and editing software. This course is considered a full-year course. Recommended grade levels: 9th-10th-11th-12th grade.</i></p>
