Cypress’ Classroom is a fully outdoor nature and relationship based enrichment program. Our students have open space, fresh air to explore risky play and fill their unique sensory needs. Our approach focuses on the whole child and incorporates the inquiry method and project-based learning. By using this approach, children learn to apply subject matter to real world problems relevant to their age and community. Our classes are intentionally small to help foster meaningful friendships and create space for each student’s unique needs and interests. We start each class with a community circle. Here and throughout our day, we practice social and emotional skills such as: leadership and collaborator roles in mixed age play, healthy boundary setting, control of emotions, problem-solving, and empathy as they grow to truly know and care for one another. Students then get adequate time to explore and play in nature, building strong bodies, curious minds and developing a deep understanding and appreciation for the natural world we are all a part of. Taking away walls, technology, worksheets, and excessive structure allows space for children’s creative spirits, inquisitive minds, and excitement for learning. We encourage our students to take the lead and follow their interests. Educators then offer hands-on, nature based activities to deepen their understanding of those topics. This not only keeps them engaged but develops confidence and ownership of their education for years to come
